What is the Accelerated Reader Scheme?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based management system that helps teachers manage and monitor our children’s independent reading practice and progress. AR is introduced to children in Years 2-6 only when they are secure in their phonic knowledge.
Your child picks a book at their own level and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child takes a short book-based quiz within the AR system. This is done in the classroom at a time designated by the class teacher. Passing the quiz (with a score of 85% or more) is an indication that your child understood what was read.
AR gives children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help set your child targets and goals and to direct ongoing reading practice and book choice.
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) recently conducted a study into the effectiveness of Renaissance Accelerated Reader.
Over the duration of the study, they report that:
“The internet-based programme increased the reading age of pupils by three additional months in just 22 weeks. The effect on low-income pupils was even greater, with their reading age improving by five additional months in the same amount of time.”
Weekly Accelerated Reader Awards
The school monitors quiz results across the whole school and hands out an award to the best performing class in AR. The children enjoy the competition and we feel it encourages the children here at Meopham to read even more! The points the children's quizzing has generated are publicised in our whole school Achievement Assembly every Friday morning. They are also posted weekly in our School News which can be accessed from the link below:
Accelerated Reader Club
As well as monitoring and reporting the quiz results to the children to encourage reading at school, we also run an Accelerated Reader (AR) Club every Thursday lunchtime from 12.10 to 12.35pm in the Computing Suite. The club is run and supervised by Mrs Piromalli our AR Co-ordinator.
The club provides a quiet, supervised space for children (of any year group) to come along and read and enjoy their book.
Renaissance Home Connect
This link will take you to the 'Renaissance Home Connect' website. Where you can keep track of your child's progress on Accelerated Reader. You are able to login to Home Connect using your child's Accelerated Reader login details, and view your child's progress towards points collected, books read and targets (points targets for key stage 2 children only).
You can even set up email alerts that will inform you via email when your child passes their quiz, and of how well they have achieved! Use the 'Email Setup' link in Home Connect to do this.
We hope you enjoy keeping informed of your child's progress using Home Connect.
AR Book Finder
AR BookFinder is an exciting web-based book-searching tool from Renaissance Learning.
With this free online tool you can search for interesting and appropriate books for your child, quickly and easily, in the knowledge that there is an Accelerated Reader quiz available for each book.
We encourage you to explore this book-searching tool with your child.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher and/or the school's AR Co-ordinator Mrs Piromalli.
AR Book Level Guide
Each book level is colour-coded. The book level and colour code can be found on the spine of your child's school AR reading book. Here is our quick guide to the book level colours
