Religious Education

At Meopham Community Academy we provide our pupils with high-quality Religious Education teaching in order to give the children knowledge and understanding of the principal religions and to help pupils respect different religions by exploring issues within and between them in order to develop a positive attitude towards living in a religiously diverse society on a local, national and global scale.

We help children to understand different faiths and moral codes to guide them and develop informed opinions.  We offer challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about faith, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.  We offer the children opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development and to consider the influence of religion on individuals, families, communities and cultures.

Our pupils should be able to organise their knowledge, skills and understanding around the following key concepts:

  • Knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, values and practices
  • Thinking critically about religions
  • Reflecting, debating, discussing and evaluating.

These key concepts underpin learning in each milestone. This enables pupils to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.

Knowledge can be organised into facets that strengthen the schema.

  • Values
  • Beliefs
  • Teachings
  • Practices
  • Celebrations

The subject topics covered across the curriculum:

  • Sikhism
  • Judaism
  • Christianity
  • Islam
  • Buddhism
  • Hinduism
  • Paganism
  • Humanism
